Road Closures

Area 1: Jefferson County Government Center-Federal Center

Jefferson County Government Center
On Monday, March 1, 2010. Crews will move in to begin operations that include: mass excavation for retaining walls and the parking garage, underground utility relocations, station construction and roadwork. During construction, the bike path just south of the complex will be closed. Pedestrians will be detoured north on Johnson Road to Jefferson County Parkway.
 
On approximately March 15, 2010, the outbound side of the Roundabout on the east side of the courthouse will close to exiting motorists to provide access for construction vehicles. Traffic will be re-routed out of the complex down the newly opened Jefferson County Parkway. This closure will be in place for approximately six weeks. Construction activities will last approximately eight months, with the widening of Johnson Road scheduled in November 2010.

Ulysses Street
Ulysses Street is closed from 6th Avenue north to Mt. Vernon Road to construct MSE Retaining Walls and to make drainage improvements. This closure will be in place through the winter.


6th Avenue Eastbound Onramp at Indiana
The eastbound 6th Avenue on-ramp at Indiana Street will be closed during night time hours on Tuesday, March 16, Wednesday, March 17 and Thursday, March 18 to allow West Corridor crews to set forms on the south side of the Indiana Bridge. The closures will be in effect each night beginning at 9:00 p.m., reopening the following morning at 5:30 a.m. This activity is scheduled during night time hours to minimize impacts on the traveling public. Motorists can access 6th Avenue via the south Frontage Road or Colfax Avenue during these closures.

Area 2: Federal Center-Sheridan Boulevard


Eastbound 6th Avenue Onramp at Union
West Corridor crews will be beginning construction of the Simms/Union tunnel at the intersection of Union Boulevard and 6th Avenue. On Tuesday, March 16- Wednesday, March 17, 2010 from 8:30 am- 3:30 pm the eastbound 6th Avenue onramp at Union Boulevard will have the left hand lane closed.

6th Avenue Frontage Road

Denver Transit Construction Group, the RTD construction contractor building the West Corridor light rail project will be pouring the deck on the north side of the 6th Avenue Bridge on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 6:00 am- 5:00 pm. This activity will require a complete closure of the north 6th Avenue Frontage Road between Simms and Quail. Breeze Ski Rental will maintain access.

13th Avenue: Dudley-Carr
Crews are scheduled to begin the relocation and encasement of the Rocky Mountain Ditch on the south side of 13th Avenue between Dudley Street and Carr Street on Monday, March 1, 2010. Work hours will be Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. This operation will continue through the month of April 2010.To ensure public safety and to allow crews to stage equipment, 13th Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Dudley and Carr Street. Local access will be allowed

13th Avenue and Allison Street
West Corridor crews will be closing the intersection of Allison Street and 13th Avenue on Monday, March 1, 2010. This closure will continue through Friday, March 12th.This closure will be an extension of the current work involving drainage improvements along 13th Avenue from Wadsworth Boulevard to Carr Street. Local access will be allowed and residents living east of Allison will be able to use Yarrow Street to cross 13th Avenue. The suggested detour route to the west is Brentwood Street. To ensure public safety, pedestrians will not be allowed in the work zone. The sidewalk just north of RPM motor sports, south of 13th Avenue and Yukon Street will be maintained for access to Wadsworth Boulevard.


13th Avenue - Carr to Zephyr
Crews will begin working on 13th Avenue between Ammons and Zephyr on Monday, January 11 and continue operations there through mid-February. 13th Avenue east of Zephyr will be closed to all vehicles. Yarrow Street will be opened as a detour for local traffic accessing properties east of Zephyr on 13th Avenue. The detour will reroute traffic via 14th Avenue, south down Yarrow and across the RTD right-of-way at 13th Avenue. This detour will be in place beginning January 11, 2010 and continue until construction on 13th Avenue between Zephyr and Ammons is completed.  Construction will then advance to the west in two block increments to Carr Street. When construction crews reach Carr Street, there will be a full closure of Carr Street at 13th. Advanced notice of the Carr Street closure will be provided to adjacent homeowners and through an additional e-mail notice as the closure draws near. During the drainage culvert construction, 13th Avenue will be closed to both pedestrians and automobile traffic in the two block span where RTD is working at that time. Local access will be allowed. There is pedestrian access from 13th Avenue to Wadsworth on the south side of 13th Avenue by RPM Motor Sports.

13th Avenue: Wadsworth Blvd- Teller St
Monday, January 18, 2010, both sides of 13th Avenue will be closed east of Wadsworth Boulevard to Teller Street. Detours will include 10th or 14th Avenue to access Wadsworth Blvd. from Vance or Upham Street. Pedestrians will have access on the south side of 13th Avenue to Wadsworth Blvd. Crews will be constructing retaining walls adjacent to the Wadsworth light rail bridge. Local access will be open. This closure will continue throughout the durtion of construction for the retaining walls east of the Wadsworth Bridge.

Area 3: Sheridan Boulevard-Auraria Campus

Sheridan Boulevard
The construction of the Sheridan Bridge has phased traffic down to one lane in each direction from 10th to 14th Avenues. Traffic will be shifted to the furthest east two lanes during the first phase of construction and then moved to the furthest west two lanes during the second phase. Pedestrian traffic will also be routed in the same manner.

Knox Court

Knox Court is closed from 12th Avenue to 13th Avenue for installation of retaining walls at Knox Court.  This closure will be in effect through March, 2010. Pedestrian access is on the west side of Knox Court in the gulch.


Federal Boulevard
Traffic has been shifted to the west on Federal but remains two lanes in each direction between  10th Avenue and Howard Place.  However, the traffic light at Holden Place will be removed prohibiting left turns from southbound Federal  to eastbound Holden Place and left turns from westbound Holden Place to southbound Federal Blvd. The eastbound Colfax Avenue ramp to southbound Federal will also be closed.
 
Pedestrians will have access on the east side of Federal, and the bus stop on the west side of Federal at Holden will be removed. This traffic control will be in place throughout the duration of construction which is approximately 9 months.

Permanent Street Closures

Due to safety and operational issues, several permanent street closures in Lakewood will take place as the West Corridor Light Rail line is implemented. The permanent closures include the light rail trackway (approx 13th Avenue) at Marshall, Otis, Vance, Allison, Brentwood, Holland and Nelson. These streets will be closed across the light rail trackway, but automobiles will still be able to access 13th Avenue in areas where the street runs parallel to the tracks.
  
Denver Transit Construction Group closed Nelson, Holland and Otis streets in July 2009. The other permanent street closures will follow after right-of-way acquisitions are completed in those areas.
