N Line's track with a past

The North Metro Rail Line represents the future of the region, but it also has a past.

Though commuter rail will be a new type of train traveling through the suburbs north of Denver, it's not the only train to have traveled this path.

The N line will be built in the right of-way where the Union Pacific freight track once operated.

It was called the Boulder Industrial Lead and it traveled from Brighton Boulevard to Boulder.

RTD bought the right-of-way in 2009 for the FasTracks project, and one of the first construction elements of the North Metro project included removing the existing UP freight tracks beginning in spring 2015 to make way for RTD's commuter rail tracks.

New pipeline

Upon acquiring ownership of the UP alignment, RTD approved an easement for Suncor Energy to use 9.6 miles of right-of-way along the North Metro Rail Line to build a 16-inch underground crude oil pipeline.

The Mountain Expansion Pipeline Project extends from Commerce City to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Though the work Suncor needed to do on the North Metro alignment was finished, Suncor Rocky Mountain Expansion Pipeline construction is still underway north of 128th Avenue.
