Bridge reconstruction made possible by cooperationPartnership and cooperation are important in all areas of RTD and the Marion Street Bridge project on the North Metro Rail Line is no exception.
In partnership with RTD, the BNSF railway, and the city of Denver, there will be a bridge reconstruction project near the 48th & Brighton • National Western Center Station.
Major changes comingCurrently the Marion St. bridge is a one-track bridge for BNSF freight trains. When the project is complete, the bridge will consist of four tracks for BNSF and one track for North Metro.
The project will begin with the construction of a new, single track bridge that will be used by BNSF. This new bridge, located to the west of the existing crossing, will replace the existing Marion Street Bridge.
Good planningBuilding this structure first will allow BNSF to use it as a detour during the demolition and replacement of the existing structure.
After this new single track BNSF bridge is built, an additional three tracks will be added making a total of four BNSF tracks. Lastly, the North Metro rail bridge will be constructed on the east side of the BNSF bridges.
Forward thinkingThis is a forward-thinking, positive project for all involved:
- BNSF can eliminate their current bottleneck by expanding to a four-track bridge.
- Denver will have a wider path to build the future Bettie Cram Drive, with wider lanes and pedestrian paths under the bridge.
- North Metro rail can construct the N Line in this area without costly shutdowns and operational impacts to BNSF.
