Staff Recommends Kiewit Proposal to Complete Full I-225 Rail Line
RTD Staff Recommends a Team for the I-225 Rail Line Project
RTD staff recommended to move forward with a proposal from Kiewit Infrastructure Co. to complete the I-225 Light Rail Line all the way to Peoria. The proposal also commits to completing construction of the line by November 2015.
The public will have an opportunity to provide input at a special FasTracks Monitoring Committee meeting on July 10. The Board will hear additional public comment, discuss the matter and take action in committee on July 17. The Board is then expected to take formal action on a contract award at a Special Board meeting on July 24.
The recommended approach includes the following will complete the I-225 Line from Nine Mile to Peoria beyond the construction from Nine Mile to Iliff currently underway as part of a contract with CDOT. Construction completion is proposed by November 2015.
The recommendation to complete the entire I-225 corridor offers other benefits:
Moving forward with the staff recommendation allows us to complete two additional projects - I-225 to Peoria and U.S. 36 to Table Mesa - in the near term.
- Regional connectivity between Denver Union Station, DIA, and a major portion of the metro area.
- Maximizes mobility for military veterans and their dependents seeking medical care at the soon-to-be completed Regional Veterans Administration Hospital, to transit dependent individuals, and to key job centers.
- Serves key employment and regional destination to the Anschutz/Fitzsimons Medical Campus-including University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Children's Hospital, and the soon-to-be completed Veterans Administration Hospital-serving the 7-state Rocky Mountain Region providing medical services to approximately 57,000 military veterans.
- Creates hundreds of additional local jobs, to include military veterans.
